Skyless Corps

From Chrono Stars

The Skyless Corps (Alaminn: Vanimtar Ands; Hiin: Andsima Enklen) is a subdivision of the Alamír Empire's standing military under the governance of Wargäreim. Historically, the Skyless Corps was comprised mostly of kronakkos not only due to being based out of Wargäreim, but because of the unique cross of methodology and culture that rules over the troops to this day. Unlike the main branches of the military, the primary weaponry used by the Skyless Corps are single-pilot machines typically with a bipedal gait and posture, most often similar to the kronakkos that traditionally pilot them. These machines, called injens, are said to be direct descendants of Wargäreim's ancient living stone sentinels that guarded their cities in days of higher magic and resistance to metallurgy. In the modern day, these sentinels instead take the forms of complex machines made in the image of their kronakko creators or ancient mythology, and Chrono is often used to augment these impractical machines and enable them to keep up with more conventional weaponry. Because of this tie to Wargäreim's history, it is rare for a non-kronakko to be allowed to pilot an injen, or to even be physically capable of such on account of the machines' designs, and those that do are often of a closely related species, such as a sigkronakko or a valtheri.

While the Skyless Corps benefits from the esteem placed on the military, the division faces no shortage of detractors for a perceived waste of resources that might have been used to create more typical weapons or other items of use, such as spacecraft. In addition, because the Skyless Corps is strict on who may join when it comes to species and cultural heritage, other military branches may dismiss members of the Skyless Corps as having "special treatment" from Wargäreim and for being "washouts" of the nation's various academies or other parts of the military that are only part of the Skyless Corps by merit of their descent. Further consternation may arise from the Skyless Corps serving as a symbol of Wargäreim rather than the Empire at large, and much has been written on how the Skyless Corps represent a problem of presenting a united front. The resulting antipathy is often reciprocated, with Skyless Corps soldiers often refusing to obey orders from commanding officers outside the Skyless Corps even while serving alongside other branches of the military.

Within Wargäreim, media and propaganda tend to paint the Skyless Corps as noble soldiers and the best of their homeland, and those struggling to find a role in society may be recruited. Commanding officers in the Skyless Corps hold high salaries relative to the rest of the military, as the Skyless Corps is funded by Wargäreim more than the Alamír Empire and may deviate from their pay standards accordingly. However, the lack of funding and difficulties in maintaining the injens that serve as the Skyless Corps' main military force can lead to "grunt" pilots feeling mistreated, underfunded, and misled about the glory they would gain by enlisting. While some squadrons in the Skyless Corps have decorated machines that are often at the forefront of national parades in major holidays, these represent a minority, albeit a minority that the public disproportionately will see in order to maintain morale and funding for the Skyless Corps as a whole.

A recurring rumor — and regular subject of pop media focusing on the Skyless Corps — is that there are clandestine squadrons comprised of "true nobodies" such as criminals and debtors that are given the most difficult, grueling, and life-threatening military operations with a promise of freedom after a long enough service in the Skyless Corps. As the Chrono Stars War has gone cold, the Skyless Corps' presence throughout Ealdremen has been reduced to patrols and military exercises, further bolstering conspiracies about these "missing soldiers" not officially on any book who can be sent to harry the Alamír Empire's enemies with plausible deniability.
