Body form (Ealdremen)

From Chrono Stars

Body form in Ealdremen is used to describe, in concise and comparative terms, the basic biological attributes of an organism's body. Body form is divided into three portions: Stance, symmetry, and limb count.

An organism's stance is described as apoda (not using any limbs for a stance), bipedal (two-legged), quadrupedal (four-legged), hexapedal (six-legged), octopedal (eight-legged), or polypedal (multi-legged and used for organisms that have legs in excess of eight). This is distinct from how many limbs an organism has and is only used to refer to the organism's typical "standing" stance and what limbs are used for the species' locomotion.

An organism's symmetry, or lack thereof, is described simply as symmetrical or asymmetrical. An asymmetrical organism will lack symmetry in any organized fashion, whereas a symmetrical organism can be "mirrored" across an axis or otherwise divided into visually identical halves. The most common forms of biological symmetry are bilateral (left-right) or radial (symmetry from a center axis), though rarer forms have been documented, such as spheroid symmetry (an organism symmetrical in every direction like a sphere).

An organism's limb count is how many limbs they have. This is related to, but not always the same as, an organism's stance. Many organisms use all of their limbs in their stance, but many also do not, such as an organism that has four limbs but uses two of them for manipulating the environment and not for any sort of locomotion or standing. Organisms will be described as apod (limbless), bipod (two-limbed), tetrapod (four-limbed), hexapod (six-limbed), octopod (eight-limbed), or polypod (multi-limbed and used for organisms that have limbs in excess of eight).
