Kin is the term used throughout the Ealdremen System for species who are considered legal persons in contrast to Unkinned, species that may have some similarities to Kin but are not legally considered as such. The definitions, consequences, and requirements for a species' designation as Kin has varied throughout the term's contentious millennia-long history.
Modern requirements
As of 4364 CGC, the following conditions must be met for a species to be regarded as Kin:
- The species must be demonstrably sentient by the standards of the most recent revision of the Standardized Kin Sentience Exam.
- The species must be demonstrably sapient by the standards of the most recent revision of the Trn-Rocaccia Sapience Inventory.
- The species must be demonstrably conscious by the standards of the most recent revision of the Petrozaklý Consciousness Index.
- The species must be genetically distinct from existing Kin as defined by the Lundahl sequence factor.
- The species must have a demonstrably unique culture in the present-day.
- The species must be extant across at least one region of at least one planet.
- The species must be capable of reproduction or otherwise the creation of new individuals without the use of transmuting magic.
