Unkinned is the term given to species that are generally considered sapient and sentient but are not considered Kin. Because of this distinction, Unkinned tend to have much fewer legal protections than their Kin counterparts, even if the species is otherwise extant and "advanced enough" that they have autonomous cultures and governments of their own. However, some species are considered Unkinned for a lack of distinct society from other species, such as extinct species or hybrids of different Kin. In the latter case, the Unkinned status holds even if they are genetically distinct in some way from their parent species.
